A truly traditional London event, the Head of the River Race involves an impressive 420 'eights' or 'boats with eight rowers'. Lucian Freud at the National Portrait Gallery

LucFOver 100 paintings spanning seven decades will be included in the show at the National Portrait Gallery starting February 7. The artist, who died in July aged 88, was heavily involved in its planning. “Had he lived to see it, he would have been incredibly moved by it. It is his life in paint,” said Sarah Howgate, who spent several years discussing the exhibition with the artist. “We were all sensitive to it being an exhibition made at the end of his life.” Find out more
